Reflecting on 2021
Throughout 2021, VIP leaders tackled many challenges Arizona faced in light of the ongoing pandemic and worked to refocus local and state politics on concrete issues that affect Arizona families and residents. VIP expanded access to training for family-wage and career-path jobs, opposed tax policy that would harm children and families and led efforts to make vaccines accessible in the zip codes with the lowest vaccination rates. Here are some of the notable events and actions of VIP's year.

Arizona Interfaith Network (AIN) joined business and community leaders as part of the American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC), urging Senator Sinema and Senator Kelly to support action that would create pathways to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders, farmworkers, and essential workers. Citing the labor shortage and the instability for both immigrant families and communities, the letter makes the case for Congressional action for common sense immigration solutions. |

Tax Handout for the Wealthy Halted: Voters Will Decide
Invest in AZ Coalition Submits Petitions for 2022 Referendum
On September 28, Arizona Interfaith Network and the coalition partners with the Invest in AZ Campaign submitted referendum petitions to the Arizona Secretary of State to halt the dangerous tax handouts to Arizona’s wealthiest residents that would impoverish our schools for decades to come. While we await the verification of the signatures, the coalition has halted implementation of the tax cuts until voters can decide their fate on the 2022 ballot.
|
By demanding a referendum on Senate Bills 1828 and 1783, the coalition stopped the destructive reworking of Arizona’s tax code that would have reduced revenue by over $1 billion annually, putting future generations of Arizonans at risk. Instead the tax cut proposal will be referred to the 2022 ballot. Voters may also decide whether some wealthy taxpayers can recategorize their income from pass-through business profits to avoid the Prop 208 surcharge altogether.

AIN Clergy Denounce the Flat Tax Proposal
Update: The Flat Tax was passed as part of the FY2022 budget bills. AIN is part of the InvestInAZ Referendum petition drive to overturn the Flat Tax. Find a petition signing site here.
In an Arizona Republic Op-Ed and gathering at the state capitol, Arizona Interfaith Network Clergy denounced the proposed 2.5% Flat Tax that Arizona legislative leaders are pursuing. AIN brought into sharper focus just how the most vulnerable in Arizona would fare if the flat tax budget is adopted. In light of the harrowing year that we have come through, AIN clergy noted that the essential workers, who have sacrificed the most during the pandemic, would receive the least. “[The budget proposal] would bring no meaningful relief to these families, but instead, will write checks to Arizona’s wealthiest families on the back of our poor, middle-class, and minority families. |

Block-Walking for the COVID-19 Vaccine
On Saturday VIP leaders took to the streets in the Maryvale zip code 85031, the poorest zip code in Maricopa county. At 25% vaccinated, 85031 has the 3rd lowest vaccination rate in Maricopa County (compare that to the Carefree/Scottsdale zip code that has a vaccination rate of over 75%).
To help close the vaccination and public health gap in this area, VIP is partnering with St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the Daughters of Charity and the Maricopa County Public Health Department to bring over 1,600 new vaccines into the community.
